Guillermo Haro nació el 13 de marzo de 1913 y murió el 26 de abril de 1988. Originalmente estudió leyes, pero posteriormente descubrió la astronomía y guiado por Luis Enrique Erro se convirtió en su asistente. En los años cuarenta fue investigador de astronomía en el observatorio del Colegio Harvard, el observatorio Case, la Universidad de Chicago y el Observatorio McDonald, en los Estados Unidos.

Substituyendo a Erro, quien lo había fundado en 1942, Haro fue nombrado director del Observatorio Astrofísico Nacional de Tonantzintla, ubicado a pocos kilómetros de Cholula. Ahí, en la cámara Schmidt hizo grandes descubrimientos, siendo el principal el de los objetos Herbig-Haro, considerados como los indicadores del inicio de la formación estelar. También descubrió estrellas novas y supernovas, galaxias azules e innumerables estrellas ráfaga, así como en 1954 el cometa Haro-Chavira, en la región del Toro.

En 1971, Haro creó en el observatorio de Tonantzintla el Instituto Nacional de Astrofísica, Optica y Electrónica (INAOE), actualmente una de las instituciones más prestigiadas en su género.

Guillermo Haro was born March 13. 1913 and died April 26, 1988.  He originally studied law, however, later discovered astronomy, and under the guidance of Luis Enrique Erro, became his assistant.  During the 1940’s, he was an investigator of astronomy at the observatory of Harvard College, Case Observatory, the University of Chicago and McDonald Observatory in the United States.

Haro was named director of the National Astrophysical Observatory in Tonantzintla, located a few kilometers from Cholula, substituting Erro, who founded it in 1942.  There, in the Schmidt Camera, he made numerous enormous scientific discoveries. The most important were the Herbig-Haro objects, considered indicators of recent star formation.  He also discovered novae, supernovae, blue galaxies and flare stars.  In 1954 he discovered the Haro-Chavira Comet in the Toro region.

In 1972, Haro created the National Institute of Optic and Electronic Astrophysics at Tonantzintla Observatory, one of the most prestigious institutions of its kind.
